Yeah, I know. I went from a 4 letter Czech maiden name, to this Italian tongue twister! Everyone has a different pronunciation. My favorite so far has to be “Jiggly-otti.” (with every year, that one is more and more accurate!)
Occasionally, I run across a real Italian, who pronounces our last name authentically: something sounding a bit like “gee-OH-tee.”
But we’re not real Italians. Oh no. Several generations ago, the family moved to Puerto Rico. Then New York. And Finally Oklahoma. By this point there is very little Italian left at all; pretty much all that remains is my husband’s nose, our Catholic faith, and the last name.
So we say “Gig-lee-AH-tee.”
